Toni's Review of Sleepy Willow's Bonded Soul by Dicey Grenor ***4 Stars***

Author: Dicey Grenor
Length: 306 Pages

Ever since vampirism became illegal, the undead have been hunted to near-extinction. So Willow has to watch her back to make sure no one finds out what she is. And that’s not easy considering she’s a vampire with narcolepsy. Predator can become prey at any moment, especially with the skillful Vampire Extermination Team (VET) on the job.

Hoping to blend in with the nightlife, Willow takes advantage of being an animated corpse by performing for necrophiliacs at premiere fetish club Hades. Here, she discovers colleagues with other supernatural secrets. She’s also unexpectedly drawn to Remi, her most loyal fan, despite his deviant sexual nature and personality disorder. But succumbing to her lust is not a good idea since her maistre vampire forbids it.

Now Willow has to outsmart VET agents, escape bounty hunters, and find a cure for narcolepsy…or vampirism. And she’s got to break the bond with her Maistre, no matter how powerful and unrelenting he is.

Most importantly, can she stay awake long enough to do any of it?

*********************

What can I say about this excitingly unique, yet familiar take on vampires? Sleepy Willow’s Bonded Soul is refreshingly different, but it still holds many of the familiar lore of vampirism.

Willow is not your normal vampire. She is a vamp with a problem, she has narcolepsy. Strikingly beautiful and extremely resourceful, Willow has taken her medical condition in stride and into her own hands. After ongoing failures to find a cure, Willow turned to one last option, become a vampire. Well to her surprise it didn’t work and now she is a spiritual woman with a strong belief in good and evil, stuck in a vampire’s soulless body.

~* 5 Stars for Warrior of the Isles by Debbie Mazzuca *~

I have read a few historical highlander books over the years, not enough to be an expert, but enough to know what I like with my Highlanders. Debbie Mazzuca hits the mark with Warrior of the Isles. I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end and I couldn’t put it down.

In this story we have two main characters: Syrena a Fae Princess and Aidan a Scottish Laird/Warrior. Syrena is basically from Fae (another place) and after things that happen in the beginning of the book she’s forced to go to Isle of Lewis, where Aidan is the Laird.  She has to find Lachlan (Aidan’s Brother) because her father (the King) is dead, and in fae society men believe women are incapable of leading. So, Syrena sets off to find her half-brother Lachlan to bring him back to Faerie where he can rule as the new King since he’s also part Fae and can take control of the throne. She has a wicked stepmother in this case as well but I’ll leave you to discover how she plays a part in the book.

There is also Aidan, whose had some traumatic experiences involving the Fae and leads him to not like the Fae at all and he’s extremely leery of it all. When his brother Lachlan was younger he could hear the fae, and it basically drove their father crazy that he could hear those voices so he kept trying to harm Lachlan. Aidan protects his brother throughout the years but still basically doesn’t like the Fae. There is a lot of emotional issues involved between the Hero and Heroine since the Hero doesn’t like the Fae (Aidan) and then there is Syrena who’s basically a Fae Princess. I bet you’re wondering how they are going to work that out right? Me too… Just kidding ;) Let’s just say if you like Highlander books and you like a touch of paranormal aspect to them, then you will LOVE this book!  Keep in mind this is the 2nd book in the series, when I got it I didn’t realize it was in a series because the book appears to stand on its own just fine!

I did receive this book for Free to give my honest review. This did not affect the rating on the book and my rating/review is strictly my own opinion.

~* 4 Stars for Demon Hunting in Dixie by Lexi George *~

In the beginning of the story, you met Addy and her dog Dooley, as they take their nightly run. Her dog breaks loose and runs into a forest that wasn’t there before. She feels like evil is watching her and is attacked by a Djegrali Demon. Then a man appears out of a portal, who brandishes a flaming sword. There are two of the demons and the man, Brand kills one of the creatures. Before the second creature escapes it stabs her with its poisonous claws and she passes out.

She wakes in her house with the mysterious man Brand beside her, who tells her he’s a Dalvahni warrior, who’s lived over 10,000 years and that he hunts Djegrali demons through the realms. He wants to stay and protect her because when the demon stabbed her, he marked her and will be back to finish her off. To make matters more interesting she asks him how he knew where she lived and he informs her that Dooley told him. At this point, she’s thinking he’s just a gorgeous lunatic. Addy is disbelieving until he calls her dog over and tells her to speak and Dooley obliges by speaking English.

The book has a Southern charm feel to it. Like how Addy lives in one of those small towns in Hannah, Alabama. The kind of town where everyone gossips and everyone knows everyone else’s business. Throughout the book Addy is more terrified of her mama than she is of a demon hunting her. Believe me, when you meet her mama, you’ll be running scared too.
Besides the southern charm, Demon Hunting Dixie has an abundant amount of humor splashed throughout the pages. To put it mildly there are Demons, possessed dead bodies roaming the town, a talking dog, a flying fae kitten with gorgeous wings, a scary mama, magical abilities, and much more.

I don’t normally read this kind of paranormal, but this book kept my attention and was a nice change from my normal paranormal. If you like feisty Southern heroines with quirky sayings, thrown into the supernatural world, without a life preserver, than you’ll like this book.

~* 4 Stars for Big Bad Beast by Shelly Laurenston *~

This is a pretty good shifter series but if you haven’t read the 5 before this then you will be completely lost on characters/shifterspecies etc. I didn’t realize this was the 6th book in the series when I started it, or else I wouldn’t have read it.

The two main characters in this series are Dee Ann Smith and Ulrich Van Holtz aka Ric. Dee Ann and Ric are from enemy packs and are taught from a small age to stay away from each other or anyone in the enemy pack. In Dee Ann’s case her father always told her if she ever came across a “Smith” to start the killings.

Later on in the series they are both in their twenties and Dee Ann and Ric work together in the Group. Basically, the Group works together to protect all species of shifters, even Hybrids.

There are a bunch of murders of Hybrids going on and Dee Ann gets assigned to the case, along with two other women. They are working together to try and find out who’s sponsoring these fight clubs, where hybrid shifters are getting killed. They want to find the main person responsible for the fight clubs so they can shut the groups down.

I enjoyed Dee Ann’s character, as she’s a tough chick who doesn’t take crap and she terrifies most of the people who are in the book. She’s not really good with people skills unless it involves intimidation tactics but even with her brass personality you can tell she is loyal and has a good heart.

Ric Van Holtz is a chef for his own, well established restraints, part of the head for the Group, and a hockey player. He’s a really sweet guy who completely loves Dee Ann and knows exactly what she needs in a mate. He had some good character traits but he didn’t really strike me as an Alpha, more like a Beta but I guess Dee Ann is enough of an Alpha for both of them.

This is a great read if you like Shifter books, but you definitely need to read the other 5 books to be able to follow this series.

~* 5 Stars for Bastian by Elizabeth Amber *~

First readers should note that this is a different Satyr clan than the others in the series.  This is a Satyr clan from Rome (not Tuscany) in the 1850’s time period. The brothers in this series are Bastian, Sevin, Dane, and Lucian.

The Satyr clan of Tuscany, from the 1794 to 1813 time period and are Dominic, Nicolas, Lyon, and Raine. I don’t think the two clans are related but I’m not 100% sure. I was a bit confused myself, with a new Satyr clan, which is why I’m relating the other clans and names and time period of both so you know what’s going on in each series.

If you are new to the Elizabeth Amber series, I will tell you that the Satyr clan’s are descended from Bacchus, the Roman God of Wine.  Naturally, most of the Satyr’s work in the vineyards and do exceptionally well in this field. Not only do they flourish at wine-making, they also protect a sacred gate between Earth and the ElseWorld. The ElseWorld is a parallel realm to the Earth and is populated by creatures of myth and magic.

The two main characters in this book are Silvia and Lord Bastian. Silvia is a virgin Ephemeral (1 of 12 girls) who worship Vesta, the Goddess of Hearth, Home, and Fire. Silvia, along with the other 11 girls are changed into Ephemerals 1,500 years ago by their Goddess as a way to protect them when their temple was destroyed. Ephermals are non-corporeal beings who can inhabit the bodies of others, who are close to death.
Lord Bastian is a Satyr, brother to 3, and leads an archaeological site in Rome, excavating rare finds. Satyrs are very sexual beings and at the beginning of each month, their ancient royal blood line demands that they heed the full moon’s call to fornicate.  If they don’t do this, they can actually die.

We meet Silvia at the beginning of the book, when she’s just six-years old. She’s lead by her parents, to the Roman Forum, where others have gathered, including other girls her own age and her uncle Pontifex. Her mother informs her that it’s a ceremony to chose the Virgins and that it’s an honor to be chosen.  Basically, Silvia and the others are special and different from other children and are chosen to be inducted into the service of Vesta, the Goddess of Fire.

In the late 1800’s you meet Bastian and Silvia again. Bastian is in a sexual relationship with Michaela, who is Silvia’s friend from Vesta’s temple. Michaela is a Companion, a courtesan with the power to please any man. Bastian is in charge of excavating the Roman Forum and is famous for his finds. He’s in charge by the order of the ElseWorld to safeguard any Satyr secret that might get dug up. Bastian is also determined to find the House of the Vestal Virgins and doesn’t realize that Michaela was a part of that temple.
Silvia gives him a vision on where to find the temple, because she is looking for something special to help her and her other sisters from the temple. You can say she has ulterior motives in leading Sebastian along the way.  Please note there are some F/F and M/M action. I don’t care for those relationships much, but they did not take away from me enjoying this book.

Elizabeth Amber writes deliciously, erotic paranormals that make me want to go dig up a Satyr of my own.
